SF Marathon
I helped with the S.F. Marathon on Sunday and I’m so happy I volunteered! I thought the July 4 parade was fun, but this was wonderful. Our chapter’s motto is to ride and have fun, but it’s good to know we can help others while raising money for the chapter.
After we arrived in the area we set up several corners with the barricades and then settled in at our corner. The first runner that I saw ran by around 7:15 a.m. and since the marathon started at 5:00 a.m. those early runners were real marathoners since they ran 22 miles at that point in a little over two hours…wow! It takes a strong person to start and finish what has to be one of the most grueling physical and mental challenges. The corner we were at was next to the one where Pappy, Miles & Elaine, and DFR & Debbie were at with a group from the Sports Basement and music blaring from huge speakers. Every time runners ran by lots of fun noise could be heard cheering the runners onward.
This wasn’t the Bay-to-Breakers event so there shouldn’t have been half-naked people, but there was one runner dressed in costume that didn’t leave much to the imagination, a guy was dressed as The Hulk, and a runner was outfitted in a Roman Gladiator costume with a helmet, upper body armor, a shield in one hand and a sword in the other. By mile 22 he wasn’t moving very fast, but he managed to still be to trot.
People of all ages and running ability participated and I was amazed at their fortitude. For Michael and I the best part of the whole thing was as we applauded and encouraged them to finish it brought a smile and thanks for helping out. At one point I had to sit and a runner came over to me and shook my hand asking how I was! As he continued on I shouted, “Are you kidding?! This is the greatest show on Earth!” and he looked back and gave me a thumbs up! This gentleman had to be in his 60’s!
I will never forget my first time at helping out with this fundraiser and as I stated it won’t be my last! Reed Bagnes did an incredible job at organizing our chapter’s participation with so many members assisting. Huge kudos to Reed!
